APRIL’S ARTIST – RAASHAAD JONES

Art Opening on April 14, 2016 @ 8:00PM

Raashaad Jones is a Connecticut born artist with a passion for fantasy, lore and gaming. During his younger years, he fell in love with the various illustrations in trading card games. Seeking an outlet for his imagination, he would often be seen drawing in his sketchbooks everywhere he went. Being the “art kid” growing up, he decided to venture to Beverly, MA and attended Montserrat College of Art in 2012. Having little to no painting skills yet always determined to improve, he delved into various mediums to find what resonated with him most. Raashaad eventually discovered digital painting in his junior year of college. With a humbled ambition and support from instructors, he honed his skills with recognized merit. Raashaad found his voice in being a fantasy artist focusing on serene, boldly colored, figurative illustrations. He dreams of a life making monsters, dragons, wizards and other fantastical creatures.

Tessa Storm Jacques at Gulu-Gulu Café

On the verge of turning 20, my early childhood years were spent traveling the country with my family. From out the car window I was fortunate to see most of America and behold its beautiful scenery and animals, and with my fathers artistic assistance and my mothers encouraging spirit, these sights turned into inspiration that has carried into my work today. My work primarily consists of fantasy creatures both dark and eerie or light and endearing, as well as whimsical landscapes, and are almost always completed in traditional medias such as gouache, watercolor, and ink.

January Featured Artist at Gulu-Gulu Cafe: Scott King

Scott King will be hanging at Gulu-Gulu Cafe for the month of January, 2015.

Art Opening: January 15th at 7:00PM

Scott King is a local artist and musician based out of Beverly, MA.  His roots in painting focus on abstract expressionism and automatic writing.  Recently, however, he has been inspired by street art techniques that incorporate stencils and spray paint.  Abandoning canvas and working strictly on wood, along with combining these two different styles of art, have lead to an interesting exploration of subdued color and texture.  The palm sander has become as important as the paint brush in his latest series. Working layer upon layer while removing and adding simultaneously the artist is creating a new interpretation of the ‘push and pull’ method.

NOVEMBER FEATURED ARTIST AT GULU GULU: EMILY DUMAS

SEE THE SHOW ON NOVEMBER 13, 2014 AT 7:00PM

I'm Emily Dumas, owner and illustrator of Flowers in May. I graduated from Salem State University with a BA in Graphic Design. Soon after graduation I landed my first job as a designer at an ad agency in Boston. For six years, I worked on major national brands doing branding, point-of-purchase, digital and web design. While working full-time, I was also designing invitations and paper goods for friends and family, while building a portfolio of illustrations. I worked countless hours at my job and at home and finally in the spring of 2012, I left my ad job and to make Flowers in May my full-time gig.

Most of my time is made drawing, designing and staying up way too late. Otherwise, you can find me at a concert; scouring record stores for good hip hop; baking cupcakes; explaining Twitter to my dad; or trying to find the best fish tacos.

SEPTEMBER FEATURED ARTIST AT GULU GULU: JESSICA L. HUGHES

SEE THE SHOW ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 AT 7:00PM

The Fury of Exponential Energy is a series of mixed media works on paper which expand from my need to create a language that is dynamic, fast, bright and non-stop. I rely heavily on oranges, yellows, blues and blacks to create contrast and make words pop, imagery explode and hidden pieces catch the viewer’s eye if only for a brief moment. I am obsessed with the idea of being seen and noticed, and my work reflects that idea using various contrasts and half-organic, half-geometric shapes. I try to also evoke the sensation of movement through the colors, particularly yellow and orange clashed with darker colors.

My imagery is a grouping of symbols evoking different thought processes and ideas I keep in my head. While some symbols may be easy to identify, others are still up to the viewer to interpret for themselves. Layering and the additive process are a big part of my developments. I rarely subtract mistakes and unwanted marks. Instead, layering creates an exciting, interesting space for viewers to explore and search for blanketed ink drips, hidden words and letters and feeling the forbidden urge to touch textures left behind under heavy blankets of paint.

JULY FEATURED ARTIST AT GULU GULU: NATAN ALEXANDER & K LENORE SINER

SEE THE SHOW ON JULY 17, 2014 AT 7:00PM

Natan Alexander is a tattoo artist with two shops in the Boston area, Witch City Ink (Salem) and Lightwave Tattoo (Saugus). Additionally, he produces the Boston Tattoo Convention each year.

Natan's art draws from both sides of the spectrum of life, light and dark. He enjoys a balance of these ideas in the tattoos and art he creates. He is equally at home depicting skulls and snakes or portraits of children and animals. What he enjoys most is helping his clients realize their ideas and define themselves through their art. He believes tattoos are much more than a trend or fashion statement. Tattoos = Transformation.

K Lenore Siner is a self-taught painter. Her paintings are the expression of a lifetime devoted to practicing mystical traditions including Western Shamanism, Buddhist meditation and Tantric techniques. With the intention of creating art that acts as talisman she incorporates precious metals, magical plants, ashes and waters into each painting, blurring the line between fine art and magical tool.

NICK CRISCUOLO

I graduated from Montserrat College of Art in 2003 with a BFA in painting, but have since been doing more animation and video work. I've been interviewed for filmmakermagazine in 2012 and my work has been featured and written about on such websites as: laughingsquid.com, animalnewyork.com, lifehacker.com, io9.com, boingboing.net, engadget.com, tor.com, and others. I've screened animation work at The Times Center in New York for The Engadget Show and The Boston Festival of Indie Games. I have attended Macdowell, Yaddo, and Ipark art colonies and will attend VCCA in January. I've only made a return to painting in the last 2 years with this process of pulling paintings out of inkjet prints.
