Pop Culture Portraiture by Heather M Morris www.thirtyartsix.com - heather@thirtyartsix.com Heather M. Morris is a Boston based classically trained painter with a Master’s degree in Art Therapy from Lesley University. Originally from Pennsylvania, she rigorously trained in portraiture under the tutelage of Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts professor, Ted Xaras, and later shifted her career to art directing film and painting theatrical sets. With a passion for exploring characterizations and environments, she has concentrated on dissecting the modern mythology established by contemporary cult television and film. Applying painting techniques and chemical processes learned through her scenic art background, she attempts to capture a character’s essence through both likeness and texture. She strives to develop innovative ways to use materials in order to make the work appear distressed and aged. Many of her techniques use special recipes and products to make paints peel, crack, and patina. She particularly enjoys painting anti-heroes who walk an ambiguous moral line, using rust, grit, and a variety of distressed materials to make her paintings live in a character’s world. Her work has been featured in HBO’s Game of Thrones promotional video “Long Story Short”, on Comedy Central’s “@Midnight”, and at The 2015 Critics’ Choice Television Awards. Currently, Heather is the assistant charge scenic artist at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University and her painting credits include the Tony Award winning musicals “Pippin” and “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” as well as the Broadway revival of “The Glass Menagerie”, the Boston premieres of “All the Way” and “Waitress”, the Broadway musical “Finding Neverland”, and the upcoming Broadway production of “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.” ———- See more of Heather’s pop culture artwork at her website www.thirtyartsix.com and purchase prints at her Etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/shop/thirtyARTsix Follow Heather on social media: Twitter: @HevArtScenic Instagram: @HevArtScenic Facebook: Thirty Art Six

Susan Schrader at Opus

Susan j Schrader

I am a visual artist and book illustrator living in Marblehead with my husband, two boys and our dog. I received a BFA at The Queen’s University, in Canada and a MFA at Illinois State University, USA where I studied drawing, printmaking, painting and art history. Currently I am working on a new series of drawings and paintings on canvas and paper.

My work contains whimsical pen and ink drawings that focus on these fanciful creatures in a city-like landscape that are rich in color, full of creative patterns and bizarre movements. My current series is focused on abstracted human figures that float and dance about the surface of the canvas.

Raising my two boys and dog as well as soaking up the culture and art during several extensive family trips has added fuel to my creative fire. These trips to India, South Africa, Australia, Hawaii and Florence, Italy, for example, have given me much inspiration!

Spending time walking my dog Kerala in the forest and on the beach, practicing Zen meditation, traveling with my family, cooking and visiting Art Galleries are my tools to help focus my creative energy. In addition to working on my own Art, I am illustrating a Children’s Book that is due to come out Fall 2016. Stay tuned! I am excited to be producing my art and sharing it worldwide.  I have found a renewed energy and focus within myself and I feel that this rejuvenated creative drive is reflected throughout my art.

 Susan.

Susan's work will be featured at Opus until early July. Work can be purchased by making a check out to Creative Salem for the amount listed.

Artist Statement:

I have loved art my whole life…a window into true beauty, a silence that is so communicative, colors and shapes that can leap off a flat canvas or piece of wood, art that can loom large and fill an entire room or be so tiny and still but draw a viewer deep inside. I am so happy when I paint; lately I am making space for this art that I have loved always.

Scott King Gallery at Opus

Through late April

Scott King is a local artist and musician based out of Beverly, MA.  His roots in painting focus on abstract expressionism and automatic writing.  Recently, however, he has been inspired by street art techniques that incorporate stencils and spray paint.  Abandoning canvas and working strictly on wood, along with combining these two different styles of art, have lead to an interesting exploration of subdued color and texture.  The palm sander has become as important as the paint brush in his latest series. Working layer upon layer while removing and adding simultaneously the artist is creating a new interpretation of the ‘push and pull’ method.

Golden Girls LIVE On Stage A Drag Parody! "The Lost Christmas Episode"

TWO SHOWS ADDED TO OUR SOLD OUT RUN
JANUARY 4, 2015 at 3PM and 7PM
ONLY 35 SEATS LEFT!
BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW

From 1985 to 1992, millions of Americans tuned in to catch the loveable antics of Dorothy, Blanche, Rose & Sophia. Now they're back only this time, LIVE ON STAGE! The 60-minute show is a loving tribute to our favorite mostly gray-haired gals with a DRAG CAST. The show is a parody written in the voice and flavor of the original sitcom. It also includes seen and not see Christmas recollections of the girls.  Both tender and laugh out loud funny.

Once the lights dim, the infamous 'Thank You For Being A Friend' plays (accompanied by audience members singing along) & the actors make their way through the crowd, they receive a warm & welcoming ovation. Things get slightly 'Rocky Horror' at some points when a handful of audience members start reciting dialogue along with the cast, proving what a cultural icon the show was & still is.

Opens at Opus in their Underground dinner theater for a limited run on Sunday December 7, 2014 at 3pm, and runs three subsequent Sundays.  There will be two performances a day.  A 3PM show and a 7PM show - where a limited light bites menu is available.

There is a $20 food and/or drink minimum purchase requirement.  Opus has a full menu available at SalemOpus.com.  Gratuity is not included.

Opus is located at 87 Washington Street in Salem, MA.

The show features the award winning original cast from TGGL in NYC and 2003 and the 10th Anniversary cast of TGGL in Los Angeles in 2013. As well as the sold out Halloween run here in Salem at Opus in 2014.

THERE WILL BE NO LATE SEATING.  PLEASE ARRIVE at least 20 minutes before showtime or your tickets will be released to our waiting list.

Featured Artist at Opus: Kevin Kusiolek

Kevin is a local artist, working out of his studio in Salem, MA and has been a resident of Massachusetts for four years. Kevin earned his Bachelor's Degree of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Towson University of Maryland in 2010.

"My paintings are influenced by places that I have seen or visited. My past work captured scenes in natural daylight, but recently I have started to venture into painting night scenes. The artificial lighting, vivid colors, and heavy contrast of light and dark is much different than my past work, but it is something I am currently very interested in. This style of night paintings really brings me back to some master painters who I've always looked at, especially when I was just learning to paint, such as Carravagio and Rembrandt. As far as my paintings being void of people, my intent is to capture a particular moment that I find interesting and although people inhibit these spaces, they are not necessarily my focus. People are rarely static, especially in urban environments, so to paint them that way would take away from the energy I try to evoke in my work. To render a person from a photograph that I take isn't accurate to how I see things. In my opinion people come and go too quickly and are more or less a blur or a matter of motion. So when I speak of movement and motion it is relevant to the entire painting, as it is in reality. We are all moving all of the time, even when we aren't, since the planet is constantly in motion. The essence of people in my work can be interpreted as marks or painterly gestures, but I like to keep my work ambiguous as well and have the viewer make that decision and put the pieces together in their own minds. I feel as though the buildings I paint have the sense of being in motion or perhaps the sense of being unstable.  This idea however goes back to the concept that motion is relevant, even to inanimate objects. My overall intent when creating a work of art is to capture a personal experience and put it onto a canvas with hopes that I capture everything that I felt on that particular day."

Featured Artist at Opus: Heidi Kepnes

to Dec 31

Featured Artist at Opus: Heidi Kepnes

Heidi Kepnes creates works of art that aim to encapsulate a moment in time. The spaces between living entities and the connections that exist beyond the physical realm, are the moments that are captured to create a visual landscape of one’s memory. A memory that seems to be deciphered from an ancient codex recently unearthed; plucked from dust and strung together with pieces of metal to reveal a timeless map that speaks an esoteric language. A three dimensional world carefully constructed on a two dimensional surface, Heidi's work is wrought with symbols and metaphors that echo a time of apocalyptic destruction as well as creation from chaos. The works themselves are shaped using encaustic, collage, paint, string, and found objects.

Heidi graduated with a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art. She has since been exhibiting her work throughout Boston and the Northshore. Heidi lives in Salem in a crooked house with a crooked door and a crooked floor.

Several of her pieces that will be on exhibit were made for this show. Her work can be viewed during Opus business hours.
