SALEM, MA — On Thursday, August 21, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is open late for its monthly evening party series, PEM/PM.
Travel back to the arcades and rec rooms of the '70s and '80s with a night dedicated to retro gaming! Challenge your friends in games of skill and chance -- from vintage board games to giant Twister and a human version of Pac-Man. Document the fun and join the virtual conversation by using the hashtag #PEMPM.
Explore the entire museum through the lens of an 80s trivia game on your smartphone. Head over to a pop-up Arcade for Ms. Pac-Man, Atari games and air hockey. Discover the Maker Lounge and design a giant mousetrap. Try your hand at the Rubik's Cube or a game of Uno in the museum Atrium, where DJ Seth Issacs will mix funk and disco hits. Also, be sure to visit PEM’s hit summer exhibition, Turner & the Sea, before it closes on Labor Day, Monday, September 1.
PEM’s Instagram account (@peabodyessex) is one of the museums’ fastest growing social media platforms. Instagrammers are invited to check in under the #InstaMeet sign at the museum entrance and spend the evening sharing photos through Instagram, using the hashtag #PEMPM. Retro filters are encouraged to add a vintage, throwback tint.

PEM’s evening parties -- with music and dance performances, food tastings, lectures and art-making stations -- kicked off in the Asian Garden the summer of 2011 and have grown in popularity ever since. On the third Thursday of each month, activities have included celebrating romance in PEM’s Chinese house, dancing with Nick Cave’s Soundsuits and learning Indian cooking techniques.
Save the Date: 9/18 -- September’s PEM/PM is Sound/System. MIT Media Lab researchers bring their latest project to PEM. Wear one of their battery-powered, button-like speakers to contribute to the music of the night. Make your own mini speakers in the Maker Lounge and see an impressive collection of vintage radios courtesy of the New England Antique Radio Club.
