Salem’s first bagel pop up, Rover Bagel has been wildly popular in its first few weeks. Bakers Alec Rutter & Kimberley Charette have ramped up production and adjusted hours to attempt to meet demand but they still sell out of their unique Montreal-style bagels every day. The two, who also work at Bambolina, opened their pop up in Bambolina’s Derby Street location when the Neo-neapolitan pizza restaurant is normally closed. Show up Thursday - Sunday at 7am for your best chance to try their slightly sweet and totally fresh take on the breakfast classic. It’s the only wood-fired bagel around.



Adea Mediterranean Kitchen, Salem’s new kosher, vegetarian restaurant has finally opened on Lafayette Street not far from the old Orange Leaf space. David Winer, 32, is at the helm and initial reports are very positive. Many in Salem have been hoping for a place to find excellent falafel and Adea seems to be answering the call. According to, Winer comes from a restaurant background running coffee shops in Tel Aviv. Adea is closed Saturdays.


Salem Food Truck Festival is coming to Salem Common on October 1st & 2nd! Beginning at 11am on Saturday, the Common will host 25 of the best food trucks from across the Northeast. The entire list is too long to reproduce entirely but some of our favorites include Roxy’s Grilled Cheese, Frozen Hoagies, Vulgar Display of Poutine, and Morning Salute. Notch Brewing has had a couple of months to settle into their new and gorgeous tap room and they’ve started holding a few regular weekly events. On Wednesdays at 6:30pm, there is a 5k run that starts and ends at the Brewery. Dubbed “Meters for Liters”, owner Chris Lohring and Brewer Nate Heck plan to do the run with all comers and spread some free pretzel love to all participants after the run. No sign up is required. Notch has also started a Skee Ball League that is a couple of weeks into the season. Arrive with a team of three to compete against other teams over 9 frames of skee ball for Honor, Glory, and prizes provided by Notch.


The Naumkeag Ordinary’s initial beefsteak party was a sold-out, smash success. If you don’t know what a beefsteak is, think huge plates of sliced steak, pitchers of beer, and an apron for every guest. Why the aprons? Because silverware isn’t allowed. Naumkeag owner, Matt Brady, plans to hold a second beefsteak on Election Night, November 8th. Tickets aren’t on sale yet but keep an eye out, they won’t last long!

Bambolina owners Tim Haigh and Larry Leibowitz are building on their success in Salem by opening a new restaurant that will serve asian street food and ramen. The new spot, called Kokeshi, will open on Lafayette Street between the recently closed Salem Laundry, The Cheese Shop of Salem, and A & J King Bakery. The pair hope for a mid-February opening. Rumors of Kung-Fu arcade games, Koi ponds, and a full-pour liquor license are circulating amongst trusted sources.


In a Pig's Eye

Apparently, you can't leave a good pig down! A little over a week after the announcement that the storied institution known locally as "The Pig" (In a Pig's Eye) was unexpectedly closing it's doors a cryptic announcement was made on their Facebook page.(As seen above) After a little digging, the news was official, The Pig is RE-OPENING Monday, October 3rd under the ownership of Patrick Schultz. Locals will remember Pat as the original owner and creator of The Howling Wolf. Patrick says that arrangements have been made to operate in a pretty similar fashion for now but that BIG changes will be coming after the first of the year with a HUGE focus being high-quality food and a mission statement that is extremely supportive of many local social causes which Patrick has always been a large proponent of. Stay tuned for more as we hear.
